About Tuscany & Florence

Tuscany is Italy's greatest all-rounder: Renaissance Florence, the vineyards of Chianti, the hill towns of the Val d'Orcia, and a table and cellar worth a week.

About Tuscany & Florence

Tuscany is where Essenza Escapes began - a single estate in Chianti in 2004 - and it remains the region where our collection runs deepest, with over 150 personally inspected properties across every corner of the region. It is also Italy’s most varied destination: Renaissance palaces and world-class galleries in Florence, vine-covered wine estates in Chianti, medieval hilltowns and UNESCO-protected landscapes in the south, thermal springs, and a quietly fashionable coastal strip to the west. No 2 Tuscan trips look quite alike, which is why so many guests return year after year, each time staying somewhere entirely different.

How to Get to Tuscany & Florence

Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci / FLR) is the primary gateway for the region, approximately 5km / 3 miles from Florence city center - roughly 30 minutes by car. It is the most convenient arrival point for guests staying in Florence, Chianti, and the Siena area.

Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei / PSA) is approximately 85km / 53 miles from Florence - roughly 1.5 hours by car. It serves the northwest of the region well and is the closest airport for guests staying near Lucca, the Versilia coast, and the Pisan hills.

Rome Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci / FCO) is approximately 280km / 175 miles from Florence - roughly 3 hours by car. It is a practical option for guests based in southern Tuscany: the Val d’Orcia is approximately 200km / 125 miles from Fiumicino, roughly 2.5 hours by car.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) is approximately 100km / 62 miles from Florence - roughly 1.5 hours by car - and is well-served by long-haul connections via major European hubs.

High-speed rail is a strong alternative for guests connecting through Italy’s main cities: Rome Termini to Florence Santa Maria Novella takes approximately 1.5 hours; Milan Centrale to Florence takes approximately 2 hours.

Where to go in Tuscany & Florence

Florence and the surrounding hills
The starting point for most first-time visitors, Florence rewards repeated visits as much as initial ones - the Uffizi galleries, the Duomo complex, the Oltrarno neighborhood, and the smaller churches and palaces scattered across the city take years to know well. The hills immediately around the city - Fiesole to the north, Impruneta and the first Chianti ridges to the south - allow guests staying in the countryside to reach the city in 30 to 45 minutes and return each evening to complete quiet.

Chianti
The wine country between Florence and Siena, running along the Via Chiantigiana through the towns of Greve, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, and Gaiole, is where the majority of Essenza Escapes’ Tuscan properties are concentrated. This is rolling-hills Tuscany at its most recognizable: vine-covered estates, medieval borghi, olive groves, and excellent trattorie. The Chianti Classico DOCG produces some of the finest Sangiovese wines in Italy, and many of the estate properties in the collection open their cellars to guests. Gaiole is also the starting point for the Eroica, a globally celebrated vintage cycling event held each October that covers the white gravel strade bianche of the region - the same roads that form the course of the professional Strade Bianche race each spring.

Siena and the Crete Senesi
Siena — its shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, soaring Duomo, and intact medieval center - is one of Italy’s finest cities and a manageable day visit from almost any Tuscan base. South and east of the city, the crete senesi offer a more austere, less-visited landscape of rolling clay hills and isolated farmhouses - a quieter counterpoint to the more celebrated scenery to the southwest.

Val d’Orcia
The most iconic Tuscan landscape, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the area where many Essenza Escapes guests choose to base themselves for an extended stay. Cypress-lined roads, Renaissance hilltowns, and some of Italy’s most celebrated wines define this corner of the south: Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the thermal baths at Bagno Vignoni, the medieval hilltowns of Pienza and Montalcino, and the Romanesque abbey of Sant’Antimo.

Lucca and the northwest
Lucca is perhaps Tuscany’s least-visited major city and one of its most rewarding - its intact Renaissance walls form a 4km circuit used today as a public park and cycling path. West of Lucca, the Versilia coast runs from Viareggio to Forte dei Marmi, Tuscany’s most fashionable stretch of beach. To the north, the Garfagnana valley offers dramatic Apennine scenery that relatively few international visitors reach, and the marble quarries of the Apuan Alps above Carrara - worked continuously since Roman times - are one of the more unexpected day trips available from a base in this part of Tuscany.

San Gimignano, Volterra, and the Metalliferous Hills
San Gimignano’s 14 surviving medieval towers have made it one of the most photographed towns in the region - visiting in spring or autumn makes the difference. Volterra is less visited and more austere, with a strong Etruscan heritage, alabaster workshops, and a dramatic cliff-edge position over the surrounding valleys.

The Etruscan Coast and Bolgheri
The coastal strip running south from Livorno through Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci is one of the most quietly celebrated wine corridors in Italy. The Super Tuscans born in these vineyards - Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto - represent some of the country’s most prestigious bottles, produced in a coastal microclimate that stands apart from the rest of the region. The cypress-lined road into Bolgheri village was immortalized in verse in the 19th century, and the sandy beaches of the Costa degli Etruschi are within easy reach - making this corner of Tuscany an option for guests who want estate visits alongside time by the water.

Arezzo and the east
Arezzo rewards guests seeking something beyond the main circuit. The frescoes of Piero della Francesca in the Basilica di San Francesco are among the most significant paintings in Italy; Cortona is a well-known hilltop town easily reached from the Val d’Orcia; and the Casentino valley to the north holds 2 important monasteries, Camaldoli and La Verna, set in dense chestnut forest.

Maremma and the coast
Tuscany’s southern and coastal strip remains largely unknown to international visitors and is a strong part of the Essenza Escapes collection. The Argentario peninsula - Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano - offers a quieter, less developed seaside character. Capalbio and Orbetello attract a quietly fashionable Italian summer crowd, and the Parco della Maremma protects a stretch of wild coastal marshland unusual in Italy.

When to go to Tuscany & Florence

The best month to visit Tuscany depends on what you are looking for, but May, June, September and October are generally the strongest months for villa stays, countryside, wine, and cultural visits.

April and May are optimal for the countryside: mild temperatures, wildflowers across the Val d’Orcia, olive groves in early growth, and none of the summer pressure. June through early July offers warm, long days with most properties at their best. Late July and August are the warmest months, regularly above 35°C / 95°F in the south - the pool and the coast come into their own, and the hilltowns take on a lively summer character. Florence is busier than at other times of year and rewards early morning and evening visits most; arriving before 9am or lingering after 6pm, the city is a different place. September and October are the preferred months for many regulars: the vendemmia (grape harvest) runs from late August through October, white truffle season opens in mid-October, and the landscape is warm without being oppressive. November to March sees many rural properties and country restaurants close for the season, but Florence remains worthwhile year-round - the Uffizi in winter can be visited with almost no queuing, and the city feels genuinely itself.

Why Visit Tuscany & Florence

No other Italian region offers quite the same density of variety within a manageable geography. From a single farmhouse in the Val d’Orcia, a guest can reach 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 2 major wine appellations, 5 medieval hilltowns, and Florence in under 2 hours - and return each evening to complete quiet, exceptional produce, and a view that looks unchanged for centuries. That combination of cultural depth and private rural life, accessible within the same trip, is what makes Tuscany function so differently as a villa destination from anywhere else in Italy. It is also, relative to Italy’s more fashionable coastal destinations, exceptional value: properties of comparable quality typically cost considerably less than their equivalents on the Amalfi Coast or in Sardinia, and the operating season is longer.

The food and wine alone justify serious planning. Brunello di Montalcino is arguably Italy’s greatest red wine; Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Chianti Classico Riserva run it close. The table more broadly - Pecorino di Pienza, pici with wild boar ragù, bistecca Fiorentina on a wood fire, ribollita in a Florence market trattoria - is deep and consistent in a way that few other regions can match across so wide an area. Essenza Escapes’ local partners include trusted estate owners, truffle hunters, and cooking teachers who know which market stalls are actually worth using and which producer relationships took years to build.

What Essenza Escapes arranges in Tuscany goes considerably beyond the villa. Private tastings at Brunello and Chianti Classico estates rarely accessible to the public, truffle hunts with hunters who have worked the same territory for decades, early-morning access to the Uffizi ahead of the day’s queues, chauffeured drives through the Val d’Orcia with guides who know every chapel and farmhouse on the road, cooking lessons with market visits in Florence or Siena - these are the details that make a week in Tuscany feel genuinely different from what guests could have arranged for themselves. The local partner network here, built over 20 years, is the deepest of any destination in the Essenza Escapes collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Tuscany for a villa holiday?

May, June, September, and October are the strongest months for countryside, wine, and cultural visits - mild temperatures, fewer crowds than peak summer, and the landscape at its most alive. Late July and August are the warmest months, ideal for guests who want the pool and the coast; Florence rewards early morning and evening visits during this period. November to March suits guests focused on Florence and the cities, when the Uffizi is at its most accessible and the hilltowns feel genuinely themselves.

Which airports serve Tuscany, and how far are they from the villas?

Florence Airport (FLR) is the most convenient for guests staying in Chianti or the Siena area, roughly 30 minutes from the city center. Pisa Airport (PSA) is well-placed for the northwest of the region - Lucca, the Versilia coast, and the Pisan hills. Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is a practical option for guests staying in southern Tuscany, with the Val d’Orcia approximately 2.5 hours by car. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Tuscany?

Yes, a car is essential for almost all Tuscany villa stays. The most rewarding experiences in the region - wine estates, medieval hilltowns, the Val d’Orcia countryside - are not well served by public transport, and driving the strade bianche through the Chianti hills or the cypress-lined roads of the south is part of the experience itself. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

Should I base myself in Chianti, the Val d’Orcia, or closer to Florence?

Chianti places guests at the center of Tuscany’s wine country with Florence and Siena both within 45 minutes - a good choice for guests who want to move between city and countryside without committing to either. The Val d’Orcia suits a more immersive, slower-paced stay: the UNESCO landscape is the experience in itself, and Montalcino, Pienza, and Montepulciano are all within 30 minutes. Essenza Escapes will always discuss the right area for your priorities before recommending specific properties.

Is August a good time to visit Tuscany?

Yes, August is a fully operational season for Tuscany villa holidays. The pool comes into its own, the Maremma coast and the beaches of the Etruscan Riviera are at their best, and the hilltowns take on a lively summer character. Florence is busier than at other times of year and rewards early morning and evening visits; the countryside around the villas remains quiet regardless of the season.

Is Tuscany good for wine lovers, and can Essenza Escapes arrange private estate visits?

Tuscany is Italy’s most varied wine landscape within a single region - Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico, and the Super Tuscans of Bolgheri are all within reach of a single base. Essenza Escapes’ local partner network includes access to estates that do not offer standard public tastings, as well as winemakers who will open their cellars for a private visit. White truffle season from mid-October through December adds a further layer for guests who time their trip accordingly.
